Acne exists in various forms. Some of the forms of acne are quite gentle, appearing only as pimples that go away in a couple of days, but some can persist for long periods of time. Here are some descriptions of common types of acne.
Whiteheads – Whiteheads are white, small elevations on various parts of the skin. They are trapped follicles that have not been able to come out of the surface of the skin. Because of this, they remain within and appear white. They do not cause much distress because they go away in a couple of days.
Blackheads – When the pockets under the skin known as follicles are able to break through the skin and emerge on the outside, the skin present in them undergoes excessive pigmentation. This darkens their color and they appear black. This is what is known as a blackhead. Blackheads can become larger in size than whiteheads. They are more persistent than whiteheads.
Papules – Papules are a form of inflammatory acne. They show up as small pink bumps on the skin, usually soft to touch. They can aggravate to more serious forms.
Pustules – Pustules are another type of acne that is inflammatory. They are slightly more drastic than papules. These are apparent as circular eruptions on the skin with a red rim and a white middle, which is because of the pus trapped inside. Their formation is accelerated if the sebum has excessive fatty acids in it.
Nodules – Nodules are a very painful form of inflammatory acne. Sometimes, comedos present inside the surface of the skin and spill their contents. When that happens, the immune system of the body secretes pus. This is then trapped in the area, forming the nodule. These are apparent as lesions inside the skin. Nodules are very difficult to treat and they can leave scars as they heal.
Acne conglobata – Acne conglobata is found very rarely. A bacterial strain is known to cause it, or at least compound it from other less severe types of acne. The posterior area of the body and the chest are the commonly affected parts.
